You're always doing that something I'm not quite sure of...

It may look like a vegetable and herb garden, but really I'm growing more patience than plants.
Which, apparently I need a lot more of. Patience, that is.

Waiting. Waiting.

Do you love my faerie ring of sugar snaps peas? Cute.
I know I am supposed to plant things in rows, nice and neatly. But I didn't know exactly why and when I don't know exactly why, I tend to think "why not Not?" so I planted things in circles instead of rows hoping that it would be sweet and great for when the bamboo teepees are in and the little plants grow. However, in the mean time, the center makes a big lake when I water and it isn't so easy to keep it all neat and pretty looking because I have trouble carefully raking the soil around all of those circles and circle centers.
So, now I know why you plant in rows. I'm just waiting til the plants get bigger and I can play out my intended theory.
I know. More Patience.

Mmmm strawberries...

We had a really great holiday weekend. The weather, which can sometimes be a little fickle on this particular weekend, was amazing and sunny here and all the backyard projects got finished and they look amazing. I can say this because I'm not really involved in the making of hardscape features I'm just the girl with the vision, so, a big thanks to Ethan and Jack for their crazy hard work at making it all come true. Now it is my turn to grow the grow type things.
We had our share of grilling, as did all of the neighbors. The backyards, sidewalks, and even some rooftops were filled with the noise of people enjoying themselves. It's so good to be outside again and see people and say hello. Wintertime is so insular.
I had my three favorites of summer already.. grilled onions, roasted rosemary potatoes, and strawberries. Yum.
Also, my new crush is on chai iced tea. I've been experimenting with my iced tea maker and trying to use up some of the assortment of tea bags in the cupboard. I have discovered that one Tazo organic spiced chai tea bag along with five regular tea bags makes 3 quarts of really delicious iced tea. For me, the chai spices are enough of an added taste that it doesn't require any sugar. That's always a good thing.

I'm changing the song...

How about raindrops on zinnias. Hmmm, doesn't have quite the alliterative punch as roses, but I still kinda like it. Maybe if Julie Andrews said it out loud...

I had the best morning due to the fact that it is gorgeous and sunny outside and not humid and much warmer than the weatherman said it was going to be today. I spent hours outside weeding the flower beds and deadheading. Trying to give the flowers some Love so that they warm up and forget that May in Pennsylvania has been unusually chilly. I have this feeling that, if I could understand plant language, I'd be hearing a lot of "Why oh why did you plant us out in the cold?" (because, you know, flowers can be dramatic) So, I've been on my hands and knees catering to their whims. Sort of.

For reasons I can't quite pin down, I'm crushing on these sweet butterfly plates from CB2.
And these! I wish they were cloth instead of paper though.

Saturday...

We headed west, back to the land of my youth, through farmland and suburbia, to our destination. The world's largest chicken barbecue. My father was a member of the sponsoring service club when I was little. I spent many a third Saturday in May playing in the park while my parents volunteered or else helping out, too, when I got older. This event holds a fond place in my childhood memories.

We love eating our meal at the picnic tables in the park and taking a walk around the pond and visiting the ducks and geese. Really, any food that requires the rolling up of sleeves past the elbows to eat must be delicious. And it is!

sticks and stones...

Two ways we label gardens.

she listens like spring and she talks like June...

Seeds arrived and plans are drawn and the cucumber seedlings are getting giant and flowering and need to be planted. This "finally mostly okay to plant" weekend of planting has arrived just in time.
In addition to my old favorite Nichols Garden Nursery, I also bought seeds from a site called Container Seeds. They have varieties of different vegetables that will grow in containers. (I know you figured that out) I'm hoping that since my two raised beds are only 8x12 ft. each, I might be able to grow enough vegetables, but not have it get all kinds of jungley and squooshed together. I've had a problem in the past with squooshing. This year I'm going to work on that. In addition to the garden beds, we decided to build two vegetable tower columns by the deck corners. The idea is to grow the tomatoes and cucumbers vertically and at the same time provide some deck shade. The boards are prepped and ready, the rain just needs to stop. Thanks.
